Intro into what is a lip seal

This article will introduce what a lip seal is, how to install one and its major roles in sealing.

First of, a lip seal is a kind of self-sealing seal. It relies on the lip against the surface of the seal coupling to block the leak path for sealing.

In other words, a lip seal is a professional gadget. It maintains its tightness and it is small and fit on machine, they are typically made of a rubber material with Y and V shapes being the common size.

In this article we will also be covering how it is installed, and its major roles in sealing.
By the end of this article you’ll understand what a lip seal is and what it does for you.

The definition and Sealing principle of the lip seal

In simple terms a lip seal is a self-sealing seal. It relies on the lip against the surface of the sealing coupling to block the leak path for a sealing effect.
It forms the working pressure of the sealing ring. When the pressure of the sealed medium increases. The lip opens and more closely fits on the sealing surface creating a further enhanced seal.
Also, the lip edge has the function of being able to scrape oil away, further enhancing the sealing performance of the sealing ring.
When installed in the groove without external pressure. The sealing lip creates an initial contact pressure. At this pressure, the sealing lip is pressed against the surface. Pressure is transmitted through a material to the point of contact. The pressure at the lip contact point is always greater than the fluid pressure. So this is mainly to prevent leakage.

Lip seals have high sealing efficiency regardless of high pressure or low pressure. It also reduces wear and does not cause rapid leakage.
Pressure is transmitted through the liner to its point of contact. The pressure at the lip contact point is always greater than the fluid pressure. Thus, preventing fluid leakage. Lip seals have high sealing efficiency regardless of high pressure or low pressure. Moreover, it has a certain compensation effect on wear and does not cause rapid leakage.

lip seal vs extruded seal

So what are the differences between a lip seal and the traditional squeeze seal? A lip seal is mainly used in reciprocating dynamic seals. When compared with extruded seals. Such as O-rings, the use of lip seal provides better performance and higher efficiency.

The sealing force of the lip seal is dependent on the medium pressure. However, it guarantees sufficient sealing and avoids creating excessive friction.

Extrusion seals rely primarily on pre-pressure to create a seal. The seal contact pressure first appears. However, conventional seals can be difficult to change depending on the medium. There is a great need for pre-stress before it can work. The large pre-stress will increase the stress and contact area of the sealing ring and the sealing surface. This will create a large frictional resistance. Large friction can cause damage to the seal and can cause difficulty in starting at low pressure.

The advantages and disadvantages

The lip seal reduces the amount of wear and tear increasing seal life. However, as the friction margin decreases, the O-ring directly affects its tightness.
In addition, the o-ring is prone to roll and twist during repeated movements. Luckily, this phenomenon does not occur frequently in lip seals.
The main disadvantage of lip seals compared to o-rings is that they can only be sealed in one direction. If you want to use it as a two-way seal, you need two seals. This will increase the length of the seal and make the groove design difficult. There will be negative affects between the two seals, which will damage each other.
The design of the lip seal is bilaterally symmetrical with a good two-way sealing effect. it is small in size, making it easy to design grooves.
In the comparison of the two seals, the squeeze seal is more prone to leaking vs the lip seal.

Specifications and materials for lip seals

Typically, a lip seal is an axial seal make of pure rubber. It is available in various forms. Including V, U, Y, L, and J. Various special-shaped seals have evolved from these shapes. The rubber materials are:

  • Nitrile rubber (NBR)

  • Acrylate rubber (ACM)

  • Fluororubber (FPM)

  • Silicone rubber (MVQ)

The main difference is in sealing performance. Rubber-made lip seals can select different synthetic rubbers. As well as different compounding agents and changing the structure of the mold. You can can see in various shapes of sealing rings. And the shape of the sealing ring determines different characteristics. So the lip sealing ring can be widely used.

Advantages of the lip seal

The sealing of the lip seal is achieved by hydraulic pressure pushing against the wall. In this case the lip is in close contact with the sealing surface. The higher the hydraulic pressure, the tighter the lip and sealing surface is attached. After the sealing lip wears, it can automatically compensate itself. This type of seal is often used for reciprocating seals, with common Y and V seals.

To ensure a good sealing of the hydraulic system. The basic requirements for the sealing device are as follows:

1.When there is relative motion, the friction caused by the seal is small. And the friction coefficient is stable.

2.It has a good sealing performance within a certain pressure and temperature range. And it can increase the degree of sealing with the increase of pressure.

3.The structure is simple, convenient to use and maintain, and low in cost.

4.It has Strong anti-corrosion ability. It is not easy to damage. And it has good wear resistance, automatic compensation to a certain extent after wear and long working life.

How to install a lip seal

(1) Check the seals before installation to ensure clean and intact.

(2) Apply appropriate clean lubricant to the lip before installation. And the seal for dust proof should have suitable grease.

(3) During the installation , any surface on which the lip slides should be smooth and free of damage. Using special mounting tools if the seal is to slide over a shaft with splines, key ways or holes. soft metal (such as aluminum) or notched installation tools can not use as special tools.

(4)  Installing the skeleton oil seal, pay attention to the side of the lip facing the pressure oil. During the assembly process, maintain uniform speed and pressure to prevent the spring from falling off.
(5) You may ensure the versatility of the installation. it should press the seal into a specific position.

(6) When we stall the sealing ring in winter or a low-temperature environment. The sealing ring can stay in the same clean liquid as the sealing medium below 50 ° C for 10-15 minutes to restore the elasticity of the sealing ring lip.

(7) Rubber oil seals are hard to clean with gasoline. diesel or kerosene because the rubber type and the oil resistance of the additives are different. If there is oil and dirt on the oil seal, clean it with a clean cotton yarn.

(8) Be gentle when installing. Do not use a hammer or flat shovel to knock. If it is difficult to install, use special tools to gradually press the rubber oil seal lip.

(9) When replacing a failed seal with a new seal,  the new seal should not coincide with the previous rotation path. Make the new seal closer to the side of the liquid to be sealed, the gasket can. This finish by replacing the bushing and slip ring and changing the depth of the press-in cavity.

What influences affect sealing

  • The pressing force must be appropriate

If the pressure is too high, the sealing ring and the sliding surface liquid will be completely squeezed out making a useless seal.

  • The suitable pressure

If the pressure is too small, a layer of oil film will form on the sliding surface, which is difficult to clean. If it continues for a long time, the sealing effect will disappear, causing leakage and losing sealing performance.

  • The friction coefficient

The smoother the friction surface, the smaller the friction coefficient. the better the performance of the seal ring and the longer the service life. If the friction surface is rough, the friction coefficient will be larger and the service life of the seal will be shorter.

  • The medium

When considering what material you use, and make sure it is suitable for the seal.

  • the temperature range of use

Seals of different materials are subject to different temperatures. Such as high-temperature resistance or low-temperature resistance. Choose the correct seal for the job.

Conclusion

Hopefully after reading all of that you have learnt the following:

  1. You understand the function and principle of the lip seal. you know that rubber material makes the the lip seal and it has a relatively of good performance.
  2.  You can see that the performance of a lip seal is much better than that of the extruded seal thanks to its more stable and easier to use characteristics.
  3. Different materials will also affect the performance of the lip seal.
  4. Know about the advantages of a lip seal and the steps to install one.
  5. Finally, understand about the conditions that affect the tightness of the lip seal so that you can avoid problems when installing one.
