Shower Door Seal Size Chart
Shower door seals are sized by the thickness of the glass they grip: almost always 6, 8, 10 or 12 mm (1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″ or 1/2″). Choose the seal for your glass thickness first, then check that it closes your gap and suits its position on the door. A seal for the wrong thickness either slips off or won’t push on.
Glass thickness: metric and inch equivalents
| Metric | Inch (nominal) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 4 mm | 5/32″ | Older bath screens, framed enclosures |
| 6 mm | 1/4″ | Framed and semi-frameless doors, bath screens |
| 8 mm | 5/16″ | Semi-frameless and frameless doors; very common in Europe |
| 10 mm | 3/8″ | Frameless doors; very common in North America |
| 12 mm | 1/2″ | Heavy frameless doors and fixed panels |
| 15 mm | 9/16″–5/8″ | Architectural and luxury enclosures |
Inch sizes are nominal: 3/8″ glass measures about 9.5 mm, close enough for seals made for 10 mm.

How to measure (three numbers)
- Glass thickness. Measure the exposed edge with calipers. Don’t rely on paperwork for replacement jobs.
- Gap. Measure the space the seal must close at the top, middle and bottom of the run. Use the largest reading.
- Length. Measure the edge where the seal goes and allow a little extra to trim after a trial fit.
Then note the position (bottom, hinge side, closing edge, between panels) and, for magnetic and glass-to-glass seals, the angle (90°, 135° or 180°). See our full measuring guide.
Glass thickness vs gap: the common mix-up
“For 8 mm glass” tells you which glass a seal grips. It says nothing about the gap it can close. Two seals for 8 mm glass can close very different gaps, so check the gap range on each profile drawing.

Frequently asked questions
What size shower door seal do I need?
The size that matches your glass thickness, usually 6, 8, 10 or 12 mm (1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″ or 1/2″), and that closes the gap at its position on the door.
Is 3/8 inch the same as 10 mm for shower seals?
Effectively yes. 3/8″ glass is about 9.5 mm thick, and seals sold for 10 mm glass fit it.
Will an 8 mm seal fit 10 mm glass?
No. It won’t push onto the thicker glass. A 10 mm seal on 8 mm glass will be loose and can slide off.
How do I find my glass thickness on an installed door?
Measure the exposed edge with calipers or a fine ruler. On some doors the safety-glass mark etched in a corner also states the thickness.
Can GoldRays supply seals in sizes not listed?
Yes. Send a drawing or a photo of the old seal’s end next to a ruler; we match from more than 3,200 moulds or tool a new profile for about USD 300 to 400.
